Scientific Realism in the Age of String Theory
نویسنده
چکیده
String theory currently is the only viable candidate for a unified description of all known natural forces. This article tries to demonstrate that the fundamental structural and methodological differences that set string theory apart from other physical theories have important philosophical consequences. Focussing on implications for the realism debate in philosophy of science, it is argued that both poles of that debate face new problems in the context of string theory. On the one hand, the claim of underdetermination of scientific theory by the available empirical data, which is a pivotal element of empiricism, loses much of its plausibility. On the other hand, the dissolution of any meaningful notion of an external ontological object destroys the basis for conventional versions of scientific realism. String theory seems to suggest an intermediate position akin to Structural Realism that is based on a newly emerging principle, to be called the principle of theoretical uniqueness. ∗I am grateful to Paolo Aschieri, Herbert Hrachovec, Richard Nickl, Erhard Schnapka and anonymous referees for very helpful comments on draft versions of this article. This work was in part supported by the FWF research grant P15249.

متن کاملEmpirical Equivalence, Scientific Realism and String Theory
The phenomenon of duality in string theory provides an example of the underdetermination of the theoretical scheme by all possible empirical data. Empirically equivalent theories which arise due to string dualities differ in essential characteristics like the dimension and the topological position of their elementary objects and the form and dimensionality of spacetime. The obvious ontological ...
متن کاملScientific Realism and High Energy Physics
The paper discusses major implications of high energy physics for the scientific realism debate. The first part analyses the ways in which aspects of the empirically well-confirmed standard model of particle physics are relevant for a reassessment of entity realism, ontological realism and structural realism. The second part looks at the implications of more far-reaching concepts like string th...
متن کاملDEVELOPMENT IN STRING THEORY
The string theory is a fast moving subject, both physics wise and in the respect of mathematics. In order to keep up with the discipline it is important to move with new ideas which are being stressed. Here I wish to give extracts from new papers of ideas which I have recently found interesting. There are six papers which are involved: I ."Strings formulated directly in 4 dimensions " A. N...
متن کاملStrange quark matter attached to string cloud in general scalar tensor theory of gravitation
Bianchi type-VI0 space time with strange quark matter attached to string cloud in Nordtvedt [1] general scalar tensor theory of gravitation with the help of a special case proposed by Schwinger [2] is obtained. The field equations have been solved by using the anisotropy feature of the universe in the Bianchi type-VI0 space time. Some important features of the model, thus obtained, have been di...
